So one of the perils of being known for doing computer work, is you get asked to do side work for people all the time. I’m working on a project right now, It’s a small non-profit office with about 5 computers. The equipment they have is so old I really can’t do much for it. I was able to upgrade the RAM on two of them, but the motherboards only support a maximum of 1GB RAM. It’s DDR (That’s right old DDR1 PC 400) so it’s been a challenge doing much else. I got two bare bone systems for replacements that have 2GB DDR2 and 2.8Ghz core 2 duos, but due to their very low budget I had to leach the DvD-ROMS, from the boxes their replacing. Today one of the old system’s fell victim to NTFS corrpution, so the unfortinuate employee has so far lost all their email. (They did not have a backup solution) I did manage to slave the dying drive in the new system and it boots, so I’m going to see if I can pull anything off of it. Only time will tell. So the moral of the story is 1) Backups are priceless, never ever skimp. and 2) Never let your office computer equipment get more than 4 years out of date.
